They didn’t go to Bali. They went to a backwater town on a backwater island in Indonesia. They landed in a tiny airport which had seen better days. It had little or no electricity, and it was open to the elements.

It had rained on and off since they landed a couple of hours before. Piper had to continually wipe sweat off her face because of the high humidity. Peter explained that they were waiting for someone, and then they would go to a hotel and cool off.

Piper hoped that whoever they were waiting for wasn’t going to kill her. She needed a break from near-death experiences. She was fond of excitement and travel, she had discovered, but being shot at had worn her out. It wasn’t as if she wanted a house with a white picket fence, but she could do without running for her life.

She walked away from Peter to purchase a drink from a small kiosk outside when a gate opened and let out passengers from an arriving flight. She sipped her juice while she watched the people, interested in seeing who would want to come to this out-of-the-way island.

Most of the people looked like they were locals who were greeted by friends and family at the gate, but there were a few Europeans with suitcases, and she watched them closely to make sure that they weren’t looking for her. They weren’t. They focused straight ahead, as if they were in a hurry to get to their hotels or whatever important business meetings they had.

Then, someone walked through the gate, carrying a large backpack and a big messenger bag. Piper recognized him immediately, and she had no idea why he was there.
